A complete eye checkup, for you and your parents.
TL;DR
A comprehensive eye checkup looks at far more than your spectacle power. In one calm visit we test your vision and refraction, check eye pressure, examine the front of the eye, and look at the retina with the eye dilated, adding scans like OCT or visual field testing only when there's a reason. The same surgeon reads your results and explains them plainly. Easy to bring an elderly parent: on-site parking and wheelchair access.
What a full eye checkup includes
A proper checkup is a sequence of simple, painless steps. Together they build a clear picture of how your eyes see and how healthy they are.
Vision and refraction
We measure how clearly you see and work out your exact glasses or contact lens power. If your number has changed, you'll know, and you can update glasses at our in-house optical store if you wish.
Eye pressure
We check the pressure inside your eyes. Raised pressure can be an early sign of glaucoma, which usually causes no symptoms until late, so this quiet number matters. If anything looks borderline, we explain what it means on our glaucoma page.
Front-of-eye examination
Under magnification we look at the eyelids, cornea, and the natural lens. This is where we'd spot early cataract, dryness, or surface problems.
Dilated retina examination
With dilating drops we examine the retina and optic nerve at the back of the eye. This is the part that catches diabetic changes and other silent issues, and it's why a few hours of blurred near vision afterwards is worth it.
Diagnostics, only when needed
Where the exam raises a question, we may add generic diagnostics such as OCT, widefield retinal imaging, or visual field testing. These are not routine for everyone, they're targeted, and every result is read by the surgeon who examined you, not handed off.
Who should get one, and how often
Everyone benefits from a periodic check, even with no complaints, because the eye hides problems well. Some people should be more regular about it:
- Over 40s: reading vision shifts and the risk of glaucoma and cataract rises, so a yearly to two-yearly check is sensible.
- People with diabetes: sugar can damage the retina before you notice anything. See our diabetic eye screening page for how often to check.
- Family history of glaucoma: if a parent or sibling has it, your own risk is higher and worth monitoring. Our glaucoma page explains the family-screening angle.
- Children whose power is changing: if a child's spectacle number keeps climbing, our myopia clinic looks at why and what can slow it.
Bringing a parent along
Many people book here on behalf of an elderly mother or father, and we try to make that easy. There is adequate on-site parking and wheelchair access throughout the hospital, so movement is simple. The same surgeon examines your parent personally and explains findings clearly, to both of you, so nobody leaves confused. If you'd like to prepare, just message us first and we'll tell you what to bring.
What to expect and how long it takes
Plan for around an hour. The tests themselves are quick, but if we dilate your eyes for the retina exam, the drops need 20 to 30 minutes to work. Afterwards, near vision stays blurry and lights feel bright for a few hours, so it's best not to drive yourself, and sunglasses help. Bring your current glasses, any earlier reports, and your medicine list. At the end, you get a clear explanation and, where needed, written guidance.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a full eye checkup take?
Plan for about an hour. The exam itself is quick, but if your eyes are dilated for a retina check, the drops take 20 to 30 minutes to work, so a relaxed first visit can run a little longer.
Will my eyes be dilated, and can I drive afterwards?
For a proper retina exam we often use dilating drops. They blur near vision and make light feel bright for a few hours, so it's best not to drive yourself straight after. Bring sunglasses and, ideally, someone to drive you home.
How often should I get my eyes checked?
Most adults benefit from a periodic check even with no symptoms. Over 40, yearly to two-yearly is sensible. If you have diabetes, a family history of glaucoma, or a child whose power keeps changing, you may need checks more often, and we'll tell you the right interval for you.
What should I bring to my appointment?
Bring your current glasses or contact lenses, any earlier eye reports or prescriptions, a list of medicines you take, and your insurance or TPA details if you plan to use them. If you're booking for a parent, bring whatever past records you can find.
Do you check children's eyes?
Yes. We check children's vision and refraction, and if a child's spectacle power keeps increasing we can discuss options through our myopia clinic. Early checks matter because children rarely complain about blurry vision.
What does an eye checkup cost?
Costs depend on what your eyes need. Any tests, such as an OCT scan or visual field test, are only done when clinically needed and are explained to you before they're carried out. Message us on WhatsApp and we'll guide you before you visit.
I have no symptoms. Is a checkup still worth it?
Often yes. Several important eye conditions, including early glaucoma and diabetic changes, can develop quietly before you notice anything. A checkup is how they're caught early, while there is the most to gain.
