Numbing drops
The eye is thoroughly numbed and cleaned first. You stay awake and comfortable.
If a scan has shown swelling at the back of your eye, an injection can sound alarming. It needn't. Here's what an intravitreal anti-VEGF injection actually is, why it's the right tool for diabetic swelling, and honest answers on pain and how many you'll need.
Diabetic macular oedema is leakage and swelling at the macula, the centre of your retina that gives you sharp, central sight. Drops and tablets simply can't reach it in useful amounts. Putting the medicine directly into the eye is what calms the leak and protects your reading and recognition vision.
A quick, in-house procedure under numbing drops, not an operation and not an overnight stay.
The eye is thoroughly numbed and cleaned first. You stay awake and comfortable.
The medicine is given through a tiny needle in seconds. Most feel pressure, not a sharp pain.
A short rest and you go home the same day, with simple aftercare and our number for any worry.
We re-scan to measure how the swelling responds, and decide if and when the next dose is needed.
We won't pretend to know the exact number on day one. We start, measure, and update your plan honestly.
At many busy centres, one person consults you, another operates, and a third sees you afterwards. Here, the same senior surgeon stays with you through your retina injection treatment, and every visit after.
Your sight is not where to bargain-hunt. Ask these of any practice you are considering:
At Dr. P. Siva Reddy Eye Hospital, the answer to every one of these is yes.
Third generation of a family Hyderabad has trusted with its eyes since 1975, founded by Padma Bhushan Dr. P. Siva Reddy, "the People's Ophthalmologist."
It is a tiny injection of medicine into the jelly-filled space inside the eye (the vitreous), given to treat retinal conditions like diabetic macular oedema. The medicine, usually an anti-VEGF drug, reduces the leaking and swelling at the back of the eye. After numbing drops it takes only a couple of minutes, and most patients feel pressure rather than pain.
Very little. The eye is numbed thoroughly with drops first, so most people feel a brief sensation of pressure rather than a sharp pain. The eye may feel gritty or slightly red for a day afterwards, which settles. We talk you through every step so there are no surprises.
Diabetic macular oedema is swelling at the centre of the retina, deep inside the eye, where tablets and drops cannot reach in useful amounts. Delivering the medicine directly into the eye is what actually reduces the swelling and protects your central vision. It is the established, evidence-based treatment.
It varies a lot by eye. Some settle in three or four doses; others need ongoing treatment with regular review and repeat injections over time. We don't pretend to know the exact number on day one. We start, measure your response with OCT scans, and give you an honest, updated plan as we go.
VEGF is a protein that drives the abnormal, leaking blood vessels and swelling seen in diabetic retinopathy. Anti-VEGF medicines block it, calming the leakage. Several brands exist; the choice depends on your eye and your situation, and we explain the options honestly rather than defaulting to the most expensive.
Intravitreal injections are typically cashless, but it depends on your policy and approvals. Send your insurer or TPA name on WhatsApp before you visit and we will confirm cover for your case honestly before the day.
It depends on the medicine your eye needs and how many injections, which the surgeon determines after examining you and reviewing your OCT. The honest way to understand it is a consultation. You're warmly welcome to visit us in Himayat Nagar; you can book a time on WhatsApp or by phone.
We perform medical retina care and injections in-house, and we're straight about our scope. If your case needs surgical retina care, such as a vitrectomy or retinal detachment surgery, we refer you clearly to a trusted specialist rather than stretch beyond what we do here.
